Friendship Fair - 2011
 |
Among The Largest of Its Kind
on Long Island
|
A major highlight of the past year was our Friendship Fair, a magnificent team effort and a rousing success….. For the 19th time in the last 38 years, super-splendiferous biennial “” was held and attendees flocked to our beautiful old landmark church on . Admission, of course, was free.
The Fair offered new and used jewelry, expertly made crafts, old and new books, toys, mixed media, "Trash & Treasures", collectibles, and antiques……. Gourmet food and homemade items featuring baked goods, candy, jams, marmalades and pickles were scooped up by eager buyers….. A Farm Stand (both out on the front lawn and in the Parish Hall) sold fruits and vegetables of the season. were served on both days.
Special auctions and raffles included: a of antiques and collectibles; a offering products, services, meals and high-end items donated by local merchants; and a special featuring sports tickets, week-long vacations on Fire Island, cases of fine wines and other up-scale items drew enthusiastic bidders.
Activities appealing to youngsters included "how-to"s in creative carving and decoration of pumpkins, face painting, games and the like.
Free musical entertainment was offered on both days. On Friday, there was a group sing-a-long which brought visitors and fair workers alike into the act…. we were also treated to a wonderful performance of show tunes by our super-talented soprano (Gina Haver) and alto (Linda Garrity) soloists …….and, in the evening we heard a medley of songs performed by Keith Panzarella, who accompanied himself on guitar singing songs from his acclaimed performance (as John Denver) in “Almost Heaven: Songs of John Denver”……..On Saturday, special appearances by a talented quartet from the Barbershop Harmony Society's local chorus and a spirited presentation by the fabulous were highlights of the day.
In the end we raised a record !!.... Traditionally, Ascension has contributed a portion of their Fair’s proceeds to charity and, this time, our Vestry voted to donate $3800 to for the benefit of Camp DeWolfe. The balance will replenish our Capital Fund, which is used for non-routine upkeep and improvements to our 126 year old buildings.
In all, it was what “Friendship Fairs” have always been since Fr. Latham (our 6th Rector) established this (now highly anticipated and widely attended) event 38 years ago……two days of fun, laughter, tangible fellowship and remarkable financial success in an atmosphere of love and friendship that is its hallmark!!
Friendship Fair...where lasting friends are made!
