Episcopal Relief & Development is actively gathering information on the earthquake in Haiti and how best to respond and assist the Diocese of Haiti.
January 13, 2010 - Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori has issued the following concerning the January 12 earthquake in Haiti:
The people of Haiti have suffered a devastating earthquake, and it is already clear that many have died and many more are injured. Even under “normal” circumstances, Haiti struggles to care for her 9 million people. The nation is the poorest in the western hemisphere, and this latest disaster will set back many recent efforts at development.
I urge your prayers for those who have died, been injured, and are searching for loved ones – and I urge your concrete and immediate prayers in the form of contributions to Episcopal Relief & Development, who are already working with the Diocese of Haiti to send aid where it is most needed.
The Most Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori
Presiding Bishop

The following is an excerpt from a letter we have just received from the LICC:
We know you're aware of the severe impact the economic crisis has had on individuals and families, but what you may not realize is that nonprofit's, especially those that care for the poor, have also been deeply wounded financially by the economic crisis. Donations are way down but the number of people we care for has more than doubled in the past nine months. Although we have funds to buy food for our emergency pantries and help people with rent and mortgage, we need at least $50,000 before the end of this summer to pay our staff and pay for the facilities to keep our doors open so we can distribute this food and housing assistance to those who so desperately need it.
We urgently need your support. We cannot help the poor unless we pay our staffs who serve them....Without unrestricted funds to pay for the infra-structure that supports our ministry to the poor, there are no programs. Like "love and marriage" you can't have one without the other.
Please send your contributions to the and write "" in the memo. If you wish to charge your gift to your VISA or Master Card, please call or at with the relevant information. Thank you for enabling us to continue serving Long Islanders in need.
The Rector has recently run into Fr. Matthew, on You Tube. If you have not already seen his work you should. Fr. Matthew produces every week a short YouTube video on some theological question or situation. They are brilliant. Great for teenagers and adults. This could be the face of the church in the next generation. So log onto YouTube and search for "Father Matthew presents!". You will not regret the time spent and I think you will have a great deal of fun with these presentations. And you might learn something about, the Bible, the Church, a social issue or a troubling theological question. Enjoy!
Our Parish Health Ministry coordinator, , reminds us that members of our parish family are in nursing homes, the hospital or are homebound. Please take a few minutes to keep these parishioners connected and let them know we care. A list of these parishioners and suggested actions to cheer them will be on the information table in the parish hall.
